Losing access to your phone should not mean losing access to your wallet. Cloud Backup is an optional Bifrost Wallet feature that lets you store an end-to-end encrypted backup of your wallet in your personal iCloud or Google Drive account, then restore it later using a password only you know.
Bifrost Wallet is self-custodial. You stay in control of your keys and assets. Bifrost Wallet does not store your recovery phrase, your Cloud Backup password, your backup file, or any information needed to decrypt it.
This article explains what Cloud Backup is, how to create one, and how to restore from it.
What is Cloud Backup?
Cloud Backup is an encrypted backup of your Bifrost Wallet that is stored in your personal cloud account.
It is designed as an additional recovery option alongside your recovery phrase. Instead of relying only on a handwritten copy, you can store an encrypted backup in iCloud or Google Drive and restore it later using your Cloud Backup password.
Your backup is end-to-end encrypted on your device before it is uploaded. Bifrost Wallet does not store your Cloud Backup password and cannot decrypt the backup for you.
How does Cloud Backup work?
Bifrost Wallet creates an encrypted backup of your wallet locally on your device.
You create a Cloud Backup password.
The encrypted backup is uploaded to your personal iCloud or Google Drive account.
To restore, you sign in to the same cloud account.
You enter your Cloud Backup password to decrypt and restore the wallet.
Without the correct Cloud Backup password, the backup cannot be decrypted or used.
Why use Cloud Backup?
Cloud Backup gives you an optional recovery path if your device is lost, damaged, or replaced.
It helps you:
Recover your wallet from your personal cloud account
Restore access without manually entering your recovery phrase
Keep control of your wallet while adding another recovery method
Cloud Backup is useful, but it does not remove your responsibility to protect your password. Keep your Cloud Backup password safe, protect your cloud account, and never share your recovery information with anyone.

Does Bifrost Wallet have access to my backup?
No. Bifrost Wallet does not store:
Your backup file
Your Cloud Backup password
Your unencrypted backup
Any information needed to decrypt your backup
The encrypted backup is stored only in your personal iCloud or Google Drive account. Only you can decrypt it with your Cloud Backup password.
What if my Google or Apple account is compromised?
Your backup is still protected by your Cloud Backup password. Access to the encrypted file alone is not enough to restore your wallet.
For better protection:
Enable two-factor authentication on your Google or Apple account
Use a strong and unique Cloud Backup password
Store the password in a secure password manager or another safe offline location
Do not reuse passwords or share your Cloud Backup password with anyone
How to create a Cloud Backup
The setup flow depends on whether you use Android or iOS. Use the steps that match the device and cloud account where you want to store your Cloud Backup.
Create a Cloud Backup with Google Drive on Android
Open Bifrost Wallet tap the Settings icon
Select Cloud Backup
Tap Create Backup
Select the Google account you want to use for the backup
Read the disclaimer, then tap Continue
Review the backup details, then tap Continue
Enter and confirm your Cloud Backup password, then tap Continue
Your Cloud Backup is now complete
Create a Cloud Backup with iCloud on iOS
Open Bifrost Wallet and tap the Settings icon
Select Cloud Backup
Tap Create Backup
Select the Apple account you want to use for the backup
Read the disclaimer, then tap Continue
Review the backup details, then tap Continue
Enter and confirm your Cloud Backup password, then tap Continue
Your Cloud Backup is now complete.
Your recovery phrase has been encrypted and stored in your selected cloud account. You can use this backup later to restore your wallet, as long as you have access to the same cloud account and remember the Cloud Backup password.
Important: Bifrost Wallet cannot recover your Cloud Backup password.
Bifrost Wallet does not store:
Your recovery phrase
Your Cloud Backup password
A copy of your unencrypted backup
Any information needed to decrypt your backup
This protects your privacy and keeps you in control, but it also means Bifrost Wallet cannot help you recover the backup if you lose the password. If you forget your Cloud Backup password, you will not be able to restore your wallet using that Cloud Backup. Take a moment to store your password safely before you finish.
How to rename a Cloud Backup
You can rename an existing Cloud Backup from the Cloud Backup screen. This is useful if you want the backup name to match a specific device or make it easier to recognize later.
Open Bifrost Wallet and tap the Settings icon
Select Cloud Backup
Find the backup you want to rename and tap the three-dot menu next to the backup
Select Change backup name
Enter the new backup name
Enter your current Cloud Backup password and tap Save
The backup name is now updated. Renaming a backup does not change the Cloud Backup password or create a new backup.
How to delete a Cloud Backup
Before you can delete your cloud backup, you need to complete the manual backup flow. This helps ensure you have a secure copy of your recovery information before the cloud backup is removed.
You can delete an existing Cloud Backup from the same three-dot menu. Only delete a backup if you are sure you can still recover your wallet, such as through that manual backup.
Open Bifrost Wallet and tap the Settings icon
Select Cloud Backup
Find the backup you want to delete and tap the three-dot menu next to the backup
Select Delete backup
Read the confirmation message and tap Delete to confirm
The backup will be removed from your cloud account. If you delete your Cloud Backup, you will not be able to use that backup to restore your wallet later.
Before deleting a Cloud Backup, make sure your recovery phrase is backed up and stored safely.
How to restore your wallet from a Cloud Backup
The restore flow depends on whether your backup is stored in Google Drive or iCloud. Use the steps that match the device and cloud account where your Cloud Backup was created.
Restore from Google Drive on Android
Open Bifrost Wallet and choose I already have a wallet
Choose Import From Google Drive
Select the Google account where your Bifrost Wallet backup is stored, then tap Continue
Enter the password you created for this Cloud Backup, then tap Restore
Enter a new PIN code for this device and confirm the new PIN code
Enable biometrics if you want to use fingerprint authentication, or skip this step
Restore from iCloud on iOS
Open Bifrost Wallet and choose I already have a wallet
Choose Import From iCloud
Select the Apple account where your Bifrost Wallet backup is stored and tap Continue
Enter the password you created for this Cloud Backup, then tap Restore
Enter a new PIN code for this device and confirm the new PIN code
Enable biometrics if you want to use Face ID or Touch ID, or skip this step
Your wallet is now restored on your device.
What if I forgot my Cloud Backup password?
Bifrost Wallet cannot reset or recover your Cloud Backup password. If you forget it, you will not be able to restore from that backup. Before finishing setup, store your password somewhere safe and offline.
Cloud Backup and self-custody
Cloud Backup does not change how Bifrost Wallet works. Your wallet remains self-custodial. Your keys are not handed over to Bifrost Wallet, Apple, Google, or any other third party. The backup stored in your cloud account is encrypted. Without your Cloud Backup password, it cannot be used to restore your wallet.
